Lebanon County is turning 200 years old next year in 2013, and the Lebanon County Historical Society is going to play a major role in this Bicentennial celebration.  There will be many celebratory events throughout the year, hosted by various historic organizations of the county.  The “kick-off” event is going to take place on Saturday, February 16th 2o13 at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, from 11AM to 5PM, with the main program at 1:30PM.

There will be many booths and exhibits from various historic groups.  Official commemorative post cards, maps, calendars and many more items will be available for purchase.  Music by the Perseverance Band, lead by Mr. Wayne Fox, will be part of the main program.  Plus a historic scavenger hunt for kids, and possibly a time capsule will be created also.  The Bicentennial Committee is still in the process of finalizing the program, so be sure to check back at here at The Lebanon County Pages or visit the Society’s Bicentennial page.

Just as the kids start off a new school year, fall events and local farmers begin preparations to offer locals great Agri – Entertainment extending family fun through the fall. Highlights at Stoever’s Dam Park

Following the signs along Maple Street or Miller Street, on the northern side of Lebanon, you will find Stoever’s Dam Park, open to visitors throughout the year, from dawn to dusk (except for registered camping and evening fishing). This nature area features a peaceful lake for fishing and canoeing, shaded walking/biking trails, ball fields, picnic areas, camping, and extensive wildlife inhabitants. The lake was at one time used to provide water for the Union Canal. Now, the lake and surrounding area is the largest of the Lebanon City parks. Stoever’s Dam Park is also the home of the Lebanon Community Theater, providing live entertainment of plays and musicals, on the eastern end of the lake.

Fishing at Stoever’s Dam – Lebanon, PA

Bring your canoes, rowboats, or other small craft to fish or slowly explore the lake and small coves. Gas-powered water vehicles are prohibited. A boat ramp is available, where boat trailers can unload. If you wish to store your boat at Stoever’s, please contact Director of Administration at 228-4496 for information and forms. Fishing is also great from shore and many anglers spend quiet hours fishing for bass, trout, catfish and other varieties found in the lake. Given some of the splashes and ripples noted in the water, there must be some larges catches waiting to be found. Swimming and wading is unwise, and not allowed, partly due to snapping turtles and water snakes inhabiting parts of the lake. These animals can get quite large and although they feed primarily on the smaller animals and fish, it doesn’t hurt for humans to take precautions in being safe.

Walking/Jogging Trails at Stoever’s Dam

Throughout the day and early evening, people walk, jog, or cycle along the tree-lined path that circles the lake, enjoying the view and perhaps utilizing the various Fitness Stations along the way. Each Fitness Station is designed to allow enthusiasts to take a break and try some strengthening or toning activities, such as bars for chin-ups, planks for sit-ups/crunches, and a balance beam. Strewn at intervals along the path are benches where you can take a break and watch ducklings swimming along behind their mother, or listen to the chittering of squirrels leaping among the trees.

Stover’s Dam Park Sports

From the Maple Street entrances and parking areas, two ball fields provide space for softball and baseball teams, including Midget teams, through spring and summer. Come fall, the adjoining open field is used by the Lebanon Little Cedars Midget Football Team. One advantage these fields have over many others in the county is that the fields have lighting, allowing for evening games. The concession stand offers drinks, hot dogs, burger, fries, etc during home games.

Picnicking at Stover’s Dam Park

For families and groups spending the day, a picnic pavilion is available, along with several picnic tables and grills. These can be found near the main parking area from the Miller Street entrance, and they are close to the docking/boat trailer area. While enjoying a cookout with family or friends, you can kick back and watch the resident ducks and geese, do a bit of fishing, or just let the world slow down for an hour.

Pavilions

A picnic pavilion is available from the Miller Street entrance of the Park. It is close to the camping area and boat launch ramp.

Camping at Stoever’s Dam Park

Near the picnic areas, clearings are set aside for tent and RV camping. Reserve camping space and the pavilion by contacting park officials at 269-0062 or 274-3850 for camping permits. Toast marshmallows over a charcoal fire, listen to the evening croak of bullfrogs, or cricket songs, and enjoy a sunset bejeweling the water in gold, amethyst, and turquoise.

Lebanon Community Theater at Stoever’s Dam Park

Throughout the year, local talent graces the stage of the Lebanon Community Theater, located at .Maple Street and Theater Drive, and situated along a quiet cove of the northeast lake area at Stoever’s Dam Park. Productions have included such classics as “The Sound of Music”, “ The Odd Couple”, “A Streetcar Named Desire”, and “Peter Pan”. LTC also encourages budding playwrights with their One Act Play contests, where finalists can see their work cast and performed for an audience and win prizes. Each contest is given a theme from which playwrights must center their work. Stoever’s Dam Wildlife

Wildlife is abundant at Stoever’s Dam. Although the mallards and Canadian geese are regular residents, the area is also a habitat for herons, turtles, foxes, and many other animals and birds. Park staff, however, ask that visitors do not attempt to feed the local wildlife due to the possibility of upsetting their normal life patterns that are needed for their survival. The Nature Barn, off the Miller Street entrance, provides educational information on the local habitat and animals, along with being used for meetings and events.

Gardens and Arboretum

Experiencing Stoever’s Dam park is walking into in Impressionist painting of color and light. Creamy water lilies imitate Monet’s famous masterpieces. Water reflects stained-glass colors from sky and land in dappled and brilliant brush strokes. It is one of nature’s true art galleries. Behind the Nature Barn at the Miller Street Entrance, lies a formal flower garden refuge, thanks to Ms. Dunkle, who has overseen this restful spot. It is a perfect place to sit on a bench with a good book or to listen quietly to nearby songbirds. Nearby, the Park boasts an arboretum of artfully arranged native trees. Ash, aspen, dogwood, varieties of oak and maple, along with several other native Pennsylvania trees are on display.

Park Management at Stoever’s Dam Park

Stoever’s Dam Park is managed by the City of Lebanon and maintained primarily through volunteers and a small group of paid staff. Mr. Smith, a volunteer with the Fishing Commission, comes to Stoever’s to check on the stocking of bass, trout, and other sporting fish while taking time to do some recreational fishing himself. Larry, a guard for the park, checks on campers and other visitors, along with making sure the area is safe and clean. With his great sense of humor, Larry will share delightful stories about Stoever’s Dam Park and hopes to inspire others with a love of nature to consider volunteering some time in helping the park look its best.

We ate a stuffed crust pizza (yeah I know, very high in calories, but I was a good girl and only had one slice), our food was served in a timely manner, and service was great.

By mid-March, each year, acres of preserved fields and lakewater are flocked with snow.  Looking closer, however, it may not be snow at all, but in reality  the migration of the snow geese.  Tens of thousands of the white birds rest at Middlecreek on their long trip back to northern territories of Canada.  With so many birds settled on hillocks, the effect truly matches the birds’ name, as you look out and see the snowy patches of white.

Although the snow geese bring large amounts of visitors to the nature preserve, Middlecreek is a perfect spot for any bird-watcher or nature-lover.  The Wildlife Management Area covers 6,000+ acres over Lebanon and Lancaster Counties.  Wetlands are set up for the variety of geese and ducks and the field are home to pheasants, quail, songbirds, and small game.  The small game draws the majestic birds of prey.  Hawks, owls, and the elusive eagle may be seen circling high in the bright blue sky.

Driving tours of the preserve and hiking trails throughout the area attract all who appreciate natural habitats.  Picnic tables, toilet facilities, canoeing, and seasonal hunting add to the attraction of Middlecreek.
