A Little History about Frederickburg, PA

Originally named Stumpstown, Frederickburg became recognized as a village in 1761. The Lick family, for which nearby Lickdale is named, was the most notable family from the area. William Lick served under George Washington during the Revolutionary War. His grandson, James, though born in Fredericksburg, travelled the world, including South America, where he used the carpentry skills learned from his father, to begin building pianos. While there, he created enough of a fortune to return to the U.S., bringing chocolate with him. He settled in the San Francisco Bay area. When the chocolate he brought sold so quickly, he suggested to Peruvian friend, Ghiradelli, to come to California and start a business in chocolate. It was also at this time that gold was found near Sacramento and James Lick wisely began investing in land rather than searching for gold. Upon his death at age 80, he was considered the wealthiest man in California, leaving a financial legacy for supporting the science of astronomy and the building of Lick Observatory. Three monuments to the Lick family can be found in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Fredericksbug, including a large memorial to William and James Lick, and a column on which stands a Union soldier to commemorate John Lick (son of James), who fought during the U.S. Civil War.
