A Little History of Palmyra, PA

Originally inhabited by Lenape Indian tribes, the area that became Palmyra was explored by European traders as early as 1650. By the French and Indian War of the mid 18th century, this area saw those whose names now live on as streets and places-Killinger, Kettering, Zimmerman, etc. As German, Scot, and English settlers arrived, the population grew and built small forts, homes, and farms. It was after the British won their bid to control vast areas of North America from the French, that German immigrant, John (Johann) Palm settled here and and became recognized as the founder of “Palmstown”-later, Palmyra. His value as a doctor for the community and his having been at the Battle of Brandywine during the American Revolution, brought him respect among his peers.

Although primarily a rural farming community, Palmyra gained businesses and prosperity when railroads started to connect Harrisburg with Reading and farther east to Philadelphia. After the U.S. Civil War, small businesses continued to grow. Through the 20th century, the dairy farms surrounding Palmyra have contributed to the manufacturing of Milton Hershey’s famous milk chocolate.
